Comforters made from “Hypodown”, synthetics, llama and alpaca wool, or silk are known as alternative down comforters.  They are often superior to traditional down comforters especially for those who are allergic to goose down feathers.  Alternative down comforters made from synthetic materials such as “White Cloud” simulate the look and feel of down.  Those made of synthetic material are lightweight, warm, luxurious, and machine washable.  Comforters made from alpaca and llama wool or silk are also alternatives to down comforters though not machine washable. All have proven to be a close match to down in warmth and comfort without the allergy risks.

Hypodown Comforters

Made from a combination of traditional goose down and natural syriaca clusters from the milkweed plant, Hypodown is considered a allergy free alternative down comforter.  A process that bonds the syriaca clusters to the down suppresses the dust and dander from the goose down, and enhances the warmth and breathability of the product.  Syriaca clusters are hollow and therefore have superior wicking ability, whisking moisture away from the body and into the air.  Hypodown is approximately four times warmer than other synthetics and many times more durable.

It is covered in 100% pure cotton in a 230 thread count for superior smoothness and softness. This comforter may be used alone or placed inside a duvet cover.  Those that suffer from allergies but love the feel of down will find this comforter particularly appealing.  “White Cloud” Fill is softer, loftier, and cleaner than down and holds up well to machine washing.

Llama and Alpaca Wool Alternative Down Comforter

Made from 70% llama and Alpaca and 30% sheep’s wool, these comforters are lighter, stronger and warmer than 100% sheep’s wool comforters.  They are warm and cozy but less fill is needed so you won’t get hot and sweaty underneath them.  These alternative down comforters will absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture allowing you to be dry and comfortable while you sleep.  The organically grown wool does not harbor dust mites, a primary cause of allergies, as they are naturally hypoallergenic.  Their main drawback is that they are not machine washable.

Silk Comforter

Silk comforters are increasing in popularity due to their light weight, thermal properties and natural hypoallergenic properties.  Silk alternative down comforters have higher warmth to weight ration than synthetic, wool or down fillers with a superior drapeability that is luxurious and supple.   Silk also has a wicking and self-regulating quality that allows the comforter to adjust to the heat of the body and wicks away moisture for a very comfortable sleeping environment.  Generally these alternative down comforters are covered with a 100% cotton cover providing strength, durability and protection for the silk filling.  With proper care a good silk comforter can last 5-10 years.  Silk down alternative comforters are not machine washable and must be dry cleaned.
